Liquid Additive for Activating Alkaline Paint Stripper Companion Material for T.C. 431+
TECH BULETTIN [PDF]    MSDS
T.C. 431-LA

DESCRIPTION

T.C. 431-LA is a clear, dark brown liquid with a mild odor. It is a pourable and semi-viscosity fluid with a specific gravity of about 1.104 at 68°F (9.2 pounds per gallon). The flash point of the product, as shipped, is in excess of 250°F and its toxicity rating is considered low. This product is not based on volatile solvents, is not simply a solution of chelating agents, does not contain phenols, and is, in fact, a non-aqueous liquid which constitutes a unique development in stripping activator technology.

This liquid additive is not designed to be used alone in industrial chemical processing but rather as an accelerator for the high-caustic water solutions of hot tank paint strippers used in common practice. The most outstanding value, which can be contributed by addition of T.C. 431 LA, lies in its use as a specific enhancing agent for T.C. 431+. These two products, in proper combination, can create paint stripping solutions of extraordinary potency. The ingredients of the one added to the ingredients of the other yield a high degree of synergism in the desirable chemical reactivity needed for removal of difficult finishes.

METHODS OF USE

  1. Make up a solution of T.C. 431+ at two pounds per gallon of water. Dissolve completely, and heat to the operating temperature of 180° to 215°F.
  2. Add the liquid "KICKER", T.C. 431 LA, while stirring the contents of the tank, in amounts given below (for a 2 lb./gal. solution):
    1. Per gallon of solution, add 7 fluid ounces of T.C. 431 LA or 0.055 gallons of T.C. 431 LA.
    2. Per 100 gallons of solution, add 5.5 gallons of T.C. 431 LA.
    3. On the basis of the powdered T.C. 431 + content in the solution (regardless of the concentration in pound per gallon):
For each 100 pounds of T.C. 431+ used, add 2.75 gallons of T.C. 431 LA.

The liquid additive T.C. 431 LA is recommended in conjunction with hot water solutions of high caustic strippers and cleaners in amounts from 1% to 5% by volume of the solution in the tank. In the case of use with the powdered stripper, T.C. 431+, add 2 to 3 gallons (18.4 lbs. to 27.6 lbs.) of liquid additive for each 100 pounds of powdered material dissolved in the tank solution. Temperatures may range up to boiling with times of exposure as needed.

Note: An "oily" layer appearing upon the solution surface is normal with this additive and does not indicate decreased effectiveness. Follow the stripping operation with water rinse as in common practice.

HANDLING

Protect eyes and skin. Wear safety goggles and rubber gloves. Wash thoroughly with soap and water for skin contact. In case of eye contact, flush with large volumes of water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation; avoid prolonged breathing of vapors. Store in general indoor storage areas away from excessively warm environments. Keep containers closed when not in use. As for any organic liquids, vent drums slowly by careful loosening of bungs when opening. Because this product is used as an additive to other solutions, its disposal will be determined by the methods which apply to the "parent" base.
